About us and our sources of inspiration
MikiKappa™ was founded by Michael Krumbiegel (1960). Michael, alias Miki, received his professional training at the Albrecht Dürer School for Design in his birthplace Düsseldorf (Germany). After graduation he spent several years in the French speaking part of Switzerland to further his education. From the Alps he moved on to the gently rolling hills of Chianti in Tuscany, where under the influence of Italian culture a poetic element was added to his already well developed skills as a craftsman.
His marriage to Italian artist Francesca Genna brought him even further south. Since 2003 Miki, his wife and two children live in the countryside near Marsala on Sicily. The rugged beauty of this vast island and its endless shores provide a constant source of inspiration.
Design process
The starting point of each MikiKappa project is the choice of material. Rather than making the material subordinate to a preconceived design, its character and inevitable natural variations play a crucial role in the design process.
Miki K. has expanded the narrow focus on functionality of the modern movement by allowing natural construction materials to fully express their individuality in the final product. He is especially inspired by recycling salvaged wooden elements. Old beams, barrel wood and driftwood are transformed in his hands.
In minimalist designs these materials rich in memories come to life. MikiKappa™ products and projects blend the severity of the Bauhaus with the warmth of the mediterranean sun.
